In 1995, economic activity in the Dominican Republic expanded by a slightly higher rate (almost 5%) than in the preceding year and, as a result, per capita gross domestic product (GDP) increased for the fourth consecutive year, even though the unemployment rate remained high at 16%. This trend was in keeping with the structural adjustment programme undertaken in September 1994 in an effort to reduce the externa] imbalance, narrow the fiscal deficit, limit the growth of the money supply and curb inflation. With the exception of the targets relating to monetary expansion, these goals were met, mainly as a result of the strong performance of the external sector, which contributed to a substantia] increase in national income.
