UNMAS Annual Report 2021
Perserverance Partnership Progress
For twenty-five years, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has helped reduce the impact of explosive ordnance contamination on communities worldwide. The 2021 annual report highlights UNMAS activities, achievements, funding and expenditures. But in a larger sense, it tells the story of advancing fundamental building blocks of peace and security. Around the globe, mine action has opened roads, ensured more children can safely attend school and provided increased access to water sources, farmland, markets and health facilities. These efforts have also allowed more displaced civilians to return home free of the fear of explosive threats, facilitated the safe delivery of lifesaving humanitarian relief, and created a safer environment for peacekeepers. Despite this progress, needs continue to grow. In Afghanistan, vast tracts of contaminated land have only recently been made accessible to mine action teams. In Ethiopia and Myanmar, conflict is not only adding to contamination, but forcing fleeing civilians to navigate land littered with explosive remnants of war. The war in Ukraine has seen the use of enormous amounts of ordnance, including in populated urban areas, which will require mine action for decades to come. The increased use of Improvised Explosive Devices is also having greater impact on civilians and peacekeepers – as recognized by the Security Council and the General Assembly. As this report makes clear, mine action makes a real difference in the lives of people and communities.

Global Study on Firearms Trafficking 2020
Firearms trafficking affects all parts of the world and impacts on society in multiple ways. It is a major concern in the context of human security, and it is central in law enforcement efforts and activities. Firearms are instrumental in much violence, particularly homicide; they are often used by organized criminals and they support operations related to armed conflicts and terrorism. The most common form of weapons trafficking involves small arms and light weapons; however, the character of this trafficking can vary significantly in different geographical contexts and in relation to different weapons. The 2020 Global Study on Firearms is responding to the requests (2010, 2016) by the Conference of Parties to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime on data collection and analysis related to trafficking in firearms.Building on the 2015 UNODC Study on Firearms, this report analyses the flows of firearms trafficking, the types of firearms that are trafficked, how this trafficking is conducted, how it is related to other types of crime and how firearms enter the illicit market.

Firearms Trafficking in the Sahel
Firearms Trafficking in the Sahel is part of a series of transnational organized crime threat assessment reports on the Sahel. The report explores firearms trafficking in the Sahel by looking at the nature of the market, trafficking flows, the main actors involved, as well as the enablers and impact of this form of trafficking on the region. While there is evidence of long-range firearms trafficking to the Sahel, including by air from France and from Turkey via Nigeria, it appears that the vast majority of firearms trafficked in the region are procured within Africa. Since 2019, Libya has become a source of supply for newly manufactured weapons. Apparently, newly produced AK-pattern assault rifles, sourced from Libya, are available on the black market in Gao, Timbuktu and Ménaka regions of northern Mali.

Conventional Ammunition Management - Developments and Challenges from COVID-19
This paper offers a preliminary analysis of the effects of COVID-19 (coronavirus) on the ammunition management sector in the spring of 2020. It raises key issues related to the risks associated with conventional ammunition through the implementation of relevant control and management measures. It argues that shifts in national priorities and reduced resources may affect overall international disarmament efforts by undermining the management of conventional ammunition, and potentially enhance the risks of accidental explosions and diversion. Ammunition management needs to remain a priority during and after COVID-19.

The Impacts of the Availability of Firearms in Central America
Armed violence, the subject of this publication, represents one of the most damaging security problems for Central America’s inhabitants. Violent deaths caused by firearms in countries in the region comprise between 70 and 90 per cent. Regulatory frameworks in different countries seem to be inadequate in controlling firearms used in acts of violence. This study aims to address the lack of information and analysis on matters such as the role of Governments in restraining violence and controlling the availability of firearms, the impact of transnational organized crime, and the porosity of borders and corruption. It also concludes that armed violence does not affect all members of society, such as women and youth, in the same way.
