With a population of about 20 million people, São Paulo is the fifth largest urban agglomeration in the world. The rapid rural-to-urban migration following the industrialization that took place during the mid-20th century has led to an immense urban population increase. Today, 75 percent of the Latin American population live in urban areas. The city’s infrastructure cannot satisfy the needs of that rapidly growing population.
