As far as can be judged from the limited data available, the recent rate of growth of per capita income in most of the region’s least developed countries fell, stagnated or rose very slowly. In most cases, per capita growth has been considerably lower than 2 per cent, while some of the smaller Pacific island economies have had declining per capita incomes. In Vanuatu, per capita income has declined for two successive years; the per capita income of Kiribati fell by 9 per cent in 1985.
