The number of studies conducted to estimate the prevalence of different forms of violence against women, particularly intimate partner violence, expanded greatly in the second half of the 1990s. According to a 2006 United Nations report, at least one survey on violence against women had been conducted in 71 countries and at least one national survey was available in 41 countries.
