Wood fuels

image of Wood fuels

Wood fuel, wood used to generate energy, can be processed and stored without major capital investments, and converted into useful energy as needed as part of modestly- or highly-efficient energy pathways (Song and Aguilar, 2016). Wood fuel comprises all types of biofuels originating from woody biomass, excluding material that has been embedded in geological formations and/or transformed to fossil resources (International Standards Organization, 2014). Wood fuel can be a renewable and sustainable energy source when harvested in an environmentally-sound fashion, and can be carbon neutral if converted efficiently into useful energy and integrated with supply-chains of other long-lived wood products (Hektor et al. 2016, Miner et al. 2014). The production of biochar, which is essentially a modified charcoal product, can be used for soil enhancement and may represent a very long-term carbon storage pathway (Qambrani et al. 2017).
