It is difficult to assess economic trends in Nicaragua during 1984 on the basis of the principles and methodologies which are conventionally used to examine the crisis. The country was plunged into an armed confrontation of even greater intensity than during the previous year, and his has had a decisive impact both on the aims of economic policy and on its application and the results achieved. ‘Consequently, the examination of the present economic crisis, of its causes and most significant symptoms, as well as of the results of the main indicators of activity, employment and other variables, can only be undertaken if circumstances well beyond the normal scope of economic activity are taken into account.
