Prospects for agriculture in Latin America up to 1980

Latin America will have to make an exceptional effort to raise productivity in the coming decades if it is to keep pace with the growth of internal and external demand for agricultural products. The rapid increase of the Latin American population, the rise in income and the improvement in the standard of living of most of the inhabitants of the region, the need to expand and diversify agricultural exports and to prevent a disproportionate increase in imports of agricultural commodities are the factors which will decisively influence the volume and composition of agricultural output during the next twenty or thirty years and the methods used to achieve production targets.
