Guidance for Measuring Intra-household Power and Decision-making

Statistical indicators on gender equality in power and decision-making usually focus on the public sphere. This publication offers guidance for producing statistics on decision-making in the private sphere of the home. It proposes seven dimensions of household decision-making and offers possible indicators as well as contains a suggested methodology. It is a first step towards integrating this topic into national official statistics on gender equality. Quantifying the silent inequalities behind closed doors could help to shine a spotlight on them, providing policymakers with evidence to guide their efforts towards altering the imbalances.
