THE 1996 EDITION OF WORm ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL SURVEY marks the forty-ninth year that this report or its predecessor publications have surveyed the current situation in the world economy. The Survey is prepared at the request ofthe Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly ofthe United Nations to serve as background information and analysis for international deliberations on the world economic and social situation. In the report, the Secretariat ofthe United Nations seeks to bring to the attention ofthe international community important and emerging issues ofa global nature warranting policy deliberation.
