Many people are sincerely attracted to the concept of sustainable development, although it is known to have many different definitions. The definition most often cited, and which has brought this concept to the attention of the world, is that provided by the UN World Commission on Environment and Development, commonly known as the Brundtland Commission, which states that “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987).
