The rationalization of regional economic communities needs to be seen in the context of the Abuja Treaty’s objective of establishing an African Economic Community. The treaty divides the continent into five regions: North Africa, West Africa, Central Africa, East Africa, and Southern Africa. Regional economic communities encompassing these continental regions are expected to be federative poles of the future continental common market.
