Abstract

The World Heritage Convention is the only international legal instrument that protects both cultural and natural sites. The nations (or States Parties) that adhere to the Convention agree to protect heritage in their own countries and in other countries too. Officially called the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, it was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO in 1972.
