Remote sensing or using technology to gather information remotely about an area, is a routine way of assessing potential damage to cultural heritage sites or evaluating natural areas. Satellite imagery analysis is an important component of this. In this issue, we will see how collaborations with agencies such as the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage (HIST), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) allow experts to see where sites have been damaged or need protection most.
