In a climate of monetary adjustment, and despite a marked contraction in national income due to an adverse terms-of-trade shock, 1996 was another year of robust growth, falling unemployment and lower inflation for the Chilean economy. The decline in inflation was helped by a slide of 4.5% in the real exchange rate in response to copious inflows of capital.
