This chapter offers social statistics prepared by ECLAC and by specialized international agencies, deriving mainly from household censuses and, to a lesser extent, from population and housing censuses. The statistics are grouped into seven subject areas: population, labour, education, health, housing and basic services, poverty, income distribution and gender. These subject areas correspond to some of the main divisions of policy functions commonly assigned to different national ministries (labour, education, health, housing) as well as to spheres of intersectoral policy (population, poverty, income distribution and gender). To the extent possible, the indicators have been disaggregated according to different dimensions such as sex, age group, geographical area and income level, to highlight the socio economic inequalities that characterize the region.
